HP LaserJet Pro P1102w
The HP LaserJet Pro P1102w is a basic monochrome laser printer with a few surprises, namely better-than-expected speed and Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, its pricey toner offsets its very affordable purchase price ($150 as of August 27, 2010).

Dell 5230dn monochrome laser printer is speedy
The Dell 5230dn monochrome laser printer may cost more up front ($1000 as of August 27, 2010), but its speed and expandability make it an excellent choice for a medium-size workgroup. And with its three-year limited warranty with next-business-day on-site service--not to mention its cheap toner--it's a great buy in the long term.

LaserJet Pro P1606dn has speed, pricey toner
The HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn monochrome laser printer aims at small offices and home offices that prize speed. Despite its moderate price ($230 as of August 27, 2010), it delivers plenty of pep, along with good paper handling. Unfortunately, its high toner costs make it a better fit for low-volume users than for high-volume users.

Kodak releases new ESP 9250 multifunction printer

Canon Pixma MG5220 MFP
The Canon Pixma MG5220 color inkjet multifunction (print/scan/copy) offers strong speed and output quality, and it's competitively priced ($150 as of August 25, 2010). It's a suitable match for families or home offices with light scanning needs.

Canon Pixma iP4820 Color Inkjet Printer
The Canon Pixma iP4820 color inkjet printer does just about everything well, does it fairly quickly, and does it quietly. Though you could spend less than its $100 price (as of August 20, 2010) on a competitor, some of those cheaper models can disappoint in their performance or their ink costs. The Pixma iP4820 is a better-balanced choice for home and student users.

Ctek Announces EV-DO Broadband Performance for Industrial Wireless IP Networks

Ctek, Inc. today announces wireless broadband performance to its SkyRouter series of wireless communications products. The SkyRouter 4200E incorporates cellular/PCS CDMA EV-DO technology to provided high-speed wireless communications to extend IP networks “over the horizon” in industrial applications.

Las Vegas, NV, and San Pedro, CA (PRWEB) May 17, 2006 –- Ctek, Inc. today announced the addition of broadband performance to its SkyRouter series of wireless communications products. The SkyRouter 4200E incorporates cellular/PCS CDMA EV-DO technology to provided high-speed wireless communications to extend IP networks “over the horizon” in industrial applications.

A completely self-contained, industrial-strength, 4-port Ethernet router, the 4200E SkyRouter provides IP network connectivity in applications where rapidly downloading large amounts of data is of paramount importance. In law-enforcement and public safety, for example, officers need to quickly display data-intensive applications in order to respond to immediate situations. Data-center backups and disaster recovery are also dependent on fast downloads of large amounts of data. The SkyRouter, with EV-DO technology, increases the transfer speed dramatically. This increase in performance not only speeds up existing functions, but enables new applications as well.

In addition to broadband performance, the SkyRouter also supports Assisted Global Positioning (A-GPS) , a network positioning technology widely deployed for wireless E9-1-1. A-GPS employs the power of the wireless network to provide precise positioning even in environments such as urban canyons and parking garages where conventional GPS would be unreliable. The integration of A-GPS and broadband wireless data makes this SkyRouter the ideal platform to address applications such as mobile service trucks, emergency vehicles, and fleet management.

A key component of the SkyRouter value proposition is Ctek’s unique TCO Plus, developed to reduce on-going operational costs associated with industrial IP networks. According to Ctek President William Buchan, “The true cost of deploying a wireless IP network is not in the initial capitol product investment, but in the on-going operational costs.” Ctek has incorporated an array of remote over-the-air (OTA) management tools including web-based administration, firmware updating, network logging, and network monitoring, and significantly an “out of band” (SMS) ability to control and query wireless endpoints. “Wireless networks are maturing and the management capabilities are playing catch up. Sending technicians to update and troubleshoot the remote wireless endpoints is no longer economical,” says Buchan.

The 4200E, which is now available, brings broadband performance to a family of SkyRouters that have enjoyed considerable success in the marketplace. SkyRouter applications now include remote instrumentation, RTU/PLC connections, industrial control, security and surveillance, financial terminals, point-of-sale, lottery, ATM, as well as public safety and remote workforce.

We began our testing at IL Rte 53 and IL Rte. 64 (A) heading westbound on Rte 64. Our goal was to determine performance (speed and bandwidth) of the KR1 with the Sierra 580 aircard installed. The Sierra 580 is an EVDO product which should provide a good test of both the Sprint network and EVDO performance PLUS a great competitve matched up against our IIM Cell Router running on the Sprint 1XRTT network.

Yahoo! roadtrip map

Heading westbound I connected the Alchemy Network monitor application up and we pinged Google’s website at 45 second intervals to measure latency, connectivity and network drops. Additionally we ran, as we usually do, an iTunes Radio Station (56kbs) to attempt to maintain a continuous audio stream. We were doing approximately 50 MPH westbound and were very disappointed by the continuous and repeated rebuffering of the audio stream which was at once annoying and very disarming because we have had no trouble maintaining a 64 kbs stream on the IIM system in the past.

Then I switched to the IIM 1000B system and was able to listen to the music comfortably without interruption. Measuring system speed at toast.net’s internet speed test, the KR1 showed 150 kbs ( no compression) and the IIM showed about 110 (no compression) and about 1000 kbs on the IIM system with IIM Overdrive turned on.

Below we did a screen capture of an Internet Speed Test with shows the IIM-Sprint WIRELESS system at 2171 kbs and a comparison of other wireline services including Comcast at over 4000kbs.
IIM Speed Test

As we approached downtown St. Charles, IL (B) about 17.8 miles distance and 32 minute drive time the KR1 lost the signal and was not able to reconnect. After repeated attempts we switched back to the IIM system which had no trouble connecting and proceeded to play the audio stream without drops or rebuffering for another 17 miles to IL Rte 23.(C) At that time the KR1 reconnected to a Sprint EVDO network and speed test showed 1200kbs, we switched back to the IIM system and showed 150 kbs (without compression) and over 2000 kbs with Overdrive turned on.

For the 34 miles of our test ride, the KR1 showed acceptable performance for about 15% of the drive, and poor to no connection for 85% of the drive. The IIM system worked continuously for the entire 34 miles at very acceptable performance (with compression and without compression) equaling or exceeding current EVDO standards, with more useable bandwidth as demonstrated by providing a more stable audio media stream throughout the entire trip.

We plan to take the KR1 on several more trips to get a more indepth picture of its performance and value proposition. We see dropped calls and lower real bandwidth as very serious performance issues.

Note: Your speed may vary. We suggest you try IIM Overdrive for your self. To get your free test drive, just send us a note to overdrive@internetinmotion.net

We would love to hear your comments.
